Overview
Scenius is a structured idea-exploration platform: "a structured process for progressively concentrating attention on ideas that invite meaningful exploration." Where social platforms reward immediacy and popularity, Scenius is built for depth: a place where speculative, civic, technical, and cultural questions can live, evolve, and earn the next layer of attention over time.
Its guiding question isn't "What's trending?" but "Which ideas deserve the next layer of attention?" DevsUnit partnered with the founder to take Scenius from MVP specification all the way to a live, production-grade product at scenius.live.

The Problem It Solves
Modern platforms reward opinions over inquiry and speed over substance: ideas are "rewarded for immediacy rather than depth, for performance rather than process," so genuinely interesting questions get rushed or abandoned. Scenius restores depth, patience, and care to exploration, treating attention as a finite, valuable resource worth protecting.
Ideas on Scenius persist as evolving repositories rather than ephemeral posts, so contributions compound over time instead of scrolling away.
What We Built
The MVP was intentionally focused, and we built it to be stable, clear, and extensible:
- Public idea discovery: browse and explore ideas across science, technology, social sciences, the environment, art, and beyond.
- Idea detail pages: each idea is a living space that invites further questioning and deeper inquiry.
- User accounts with secure authentication.
- Idea submission flow: a clean, guided path for contributing a new idea.
- Voting on ideas worth exploring further, and private bookmarks ("My Bookmarks") to save ideas for later.
- Clear permissions so users can only edit their own ideas.
- Admin capabilities for curation and moderation.
- Scenius Spotlight: the structured "rounds" process that elevates selected ideas for concentrated attention.
- An optional AI refinement layer to help authors sharpen their ideas, designed so the platform works fully even if the AI feature is unavailable, never a single point of failure.
- The Scenius Network: a discoverable map where "ideas find each other," connecting people, ideas, and domains.
The product spans a responsive experience across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
Tech & Architecture
A modern Next.js + React + TypeScript front end with Tailwind CSS, backed by a Node.js API layer and a PostgreSQL database modeled through Prisma. Redis keeps discovery and session-heavy views fast.
The AI refinement feature is integrated through an LLM layer, deliberately isolated so the core product degrades gracefully: if the AI is slow or unavailable, ideas, voting, bookmarks, and submissions all keep working.
The data model was designed around permissions and relationships: who can edit what, how ideas relate to people and domains, and how the Spotlight process progresses ideas without ever forcing a conclusion.
Deployment & DevOps
DevsUnit handled the full path to production:
- Railway for managed application and database hosting during build-out and staging.
- AWS EC2 for production deployment, giving full control over the runtime environment and room to scale.
- CI/CD pipelines so changes ship reliably and repeatably from Git to live.
- Environment configuration, secrets management, and monitoring for a stable production launch.
Our Role
DevsUnit delivered Scenius end to end: product engineering, UX, the full-stack build, the AI refinement layer, and production deployment across Railway and AWS EC2. We worked in close, one-on-one collaboration with the founder throughout, coordinating via Slack and iterating quickly against a detailed spec.
